Aetiology

• Complication of BPH
• Aetiology poorly understood - prostate infection, bladder over-distension, excessive fluid intake, alcohol, prostatic infarction
• Can be separated into two categories:
  • Spontaneous
  • Precipitated - non-prostate related surgery, catheterisation or urethral instrumentation, anaesthesia, medication with sympathomimetic or anticholinergic effects
