Benign nodule caused by proliferation of fibroblasts, commonly triggered by trauma
Aetiology
Multiple dermatofibromas are sometimes found in immune conditions such as HIV and SLE
Clinical presentation
Unchanging firm lesion, skin-coloured or brownish
Occasionally itchy
A dimple or central depression (known as the ‘dimple sign’) when the lesion is squeezed or pinched
Investigations
Usually a clinical diagnosis
Dermoscopy can be used to confirm diagnosis - scar-like white centre
Biopsy if still uncertain
Management
Completely benign - reassure, no excision required
