Type I - short term

• Self-limiting e.g. surgical ileus, critical illness, vomiting

Management

• Replace fluid and correct electrolytes
• PN if unable to tolerate oral food/fluids >7 days post op
• PPIs

Type II - medium term

• e.g. post-surgery awaiting reconstruction

Management

• PN support

Type III - long term

• Chronic intestinal failure e.g. short bowel syndrome, Crohn’s

Management

• Home PN
• Intestinal transplantation may be indicated
