Outpouching in the lower part of the small intestine
Aetiology
Congenital defect - remnant of omphalomesenteric duct
Higher prevalence in males
Clinical features
Majority are asymptomatic - common incidental finding at laparotomy
Presentations are the result of complications
Haemorrhage accounts for 25-50% of all complications
More common in children < 2 years
Bright red blood in stools, painless
Classical presentation in adults includes intestinal obstruction and inflammation of the diverticulum
Can mimic appendicitis
May also present due to ulceration or malignant change
