Describes a temporary set of symptoms due to ischaemia in the posterior circulation of the brain
Aetiology
Caused by narrowing of the posterior circulation arteries, most commonly due to arteriosclerosis
Clinical features
Causes vertigo on looking up
For diagnosis of VBI need other symptoms of impaired circulation in posterior brain associated with the vertigo
Visual disturbance
Weakness
Numbness
Investigations
Bloods:
FBC, U+Es, LFTs, cholesterol, electrolytes, coag screen
Imaging:
CT/MRI
CTA or MRA: can be used to detect atherosclerosis and other diseases in the posterior circulation arteries

Some patients may be suitable for surgery
